Ceres Mountain
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | the south-west of the radio mast is a gently sloping fynbos field (easy pull-up) at the top of a serrated gully with cliffs. |
| Landing : | Any uncultivated field in the valley. Avoid orchards and vineyards, and politely thank any farmer nearby for the use of his land. |
| Going there : | The 'bad road/friendly farmer' route: take the N1 to Worcester, then the R43 to Ceres, turn left to Prince Alfred Hamlet, and drive up the Gydo Pass. 7km from the top of the pass, turn right and drive for approximately 8km along the gravel road. Turn right into the farm 'Driefontein* and head up to the farm house to arrange permission, before continuing (2hrs) on the 4x4 road past the right hand side of the farm dam. The 'good road / unfriendly farmer' route - negotiate permission well in advance with Gielie Oberholzer on the farm on eastern side through Louis. |
| Comments : | Thermal. 'Waboomberg' overlooks the dry fruit valley of Ceres. Expect a very thermal flight from this inland site. To the east lie the salt-pans of Inverdoorn and the beginning of the desert: XC potential is good. The flatlands out in the Ceres valley have consistent thermals. Mainly a spring and autumn site as the wind tends to swing W early in the afternoon due to a low pressure developing in the desert. |
| Weather hazards : | Strong thermals in high summer. Turbulence soon after launch. Power lines on landing. Strong turbulent W wind in the summer afternoons. |
| Flight regulation : | Launch at 1000m (1600m ASL). Ceiling is 2900m ASL road access permission must be negotiated |

Cornberg
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | This site is called Cornberg on Leonardo but in South Africa is known as Koringberg. Koringberg is a small ridge in the Flatlands which we use as a launchpad for cross country flatland flying. Multiple take off's in different directions. Suitable wind directions: S, SW, W, SE,E. Altitude: 480m ASL (about 300m AGL. |
| Landing : | Plentiful fields that do not have crop growing in them. |
| Going there : | From Cape Town head out on the N7 towards Picketburg. After Moorreesburg you will see a sign that says Koringberg. Turn left and left again at the first farm road 1.8km. You will see a sign that says Die Ark - it has a little paraglider pilot picture on it. Announce yourself to the farm owners. EVERYONE entering the property must sign in. This is private property and the farm owners are sensitive to you respecting their rights. |
| Comments : | The site was only founded in 2006 but has become a favourite amongst local Cross Country enthusiasts. Site Record is 74kms Open Distance set by Craig Richards in 2006 - however Leonardo OLC distances in 2007 are higher. Ridge is low (300m AGL)time your take off well and use every bit of lift right from the start. It would be helpful to think of it as releasing from a winch tow - You can't waste any lift. Flygirl has articles relating to: How to get more Koringberg Kms by Greg Hamerton. |
| Weather hazards : | Best months: October/November/February. 'Hot' months: Dec/January. Air is super thermic and window is small due to strong winds. |
| Flight regulation : | Airspace restrictions apply. Info to follow but basically ATC requires a call from you to log a verbal 'flight plan' and at least one pilot must carry and monitor an airband radio. |
| People to contact : | Owners of the farm are Bregda 083 597 0091. Theubes 082 325 0626 Tel 022 423 8153 Fax 022 423 8224 ark@patat.co.za. FLYGIRL +27 (0)83 679 1177. Bernie Kelly +27 (0)82 650 9691. |

Dasklip Pass, Porterville
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Big and nicley-prepared launch above the road just before the highest point of the pass. The site can be tricky in SW-conditions because of the thermals from the gully to the left of the launch; and the 'wind' often appears to be coming from that direction. Wind can get strong. Launch from as far back as possible (rear right looking up-slope). This allows a run with good speed as you become airborne. Hang-gliders usually launch from the steel ramp below the road opposite the paragliding launch. Launch site fee R50 per day or R500 per year (pay at the Lodge before your flight). The lanuch is nicely prepared with netting and large enough for 2-3 wings. Medium difficulty. |
| Landing : | At the bottom! You will see the 'Turkey Patch' when you get there, just where the road to launch splits off. There is a windsock at a fork with a few fields to choose from. If that windsock is pointing horizontally the launch is often blown out, beware. I generally land on the far side of the road to avoid telephone lines and stuff like that. Don't land in crops and don't land in fields with ostriches they can get real nasty!! |
| Going there : | Take the N1 from Cape Town to Piketburg. Just before Piketberg take the R44 to Porterville for 25km. When you get to the T-junction at the end of that road turn left (right takes you into Porterville). After about 3km take a right onto a rough dirt road signposted to Dasklip Pass. Follow that for about 9km until you get to a fork (the turkey-patch) and bear right and up the mountain, a long winding tar road which you should take nice and easy (speed limit: 40 km/h). You will see a hang glider ramp near the top on your left. The paragliding launch is above that. Park on the up-slope side, facing Porterville. |
| Comments : | Great site. Really cooks in the summer and good for training in winter. Very consistent conditions. You can get really high and it is not hard to do 100km+ with the Olifants River mountain range alone running for more than 70km south to north. House thermal is just past the ravine to the right, where the one south facing rock face is. Below that halfway out to the plains in a rocky bump called 'rescue' - early often your the best low save chance. |
| Weather hazards : | Thermals can become very strong; and turbulent near the ridge, so fly very actively. Late afternoon SW-winds often prevent launching - fly early, gusts over 40 km/h are not uncommon later. Beware of dust devils, that develop many days in the plains. When they come too close to the road under the launch - extra care, they do also appear on launch sometimes then. Check for rotor and wind from the back even though it is rare. Just drive past the launch on the road to the small Beaverlac junction to check the wind. There is a streamer on a tree and it's 1 minute away by car. |
| Flight regulation : | Ceiling 4000m (amsl) See the site rules at the launch site. Flatland flights to the west might require permission (ask at the Flyers' Lodge) No commercial tandems, SAHPA (guest) membership, site fee (see above) |
| People to contact : | Flyers' Lodge, Porterville +27 22 931 3416 Tel +27 22 931 3308 Fax Rob Manzoni +27 82 788 4398 |
| Tourism : | Fantastic touristic possibilities, historical places such as Tulbach, Wine tasting, Coastal experiences (kite-surfing, sea-kayaking) and wilderness walks. Rob Manzoni's Flyers' Lodge is a good place to go for a beer and a swim; and to talk paragliding with other paragliding types. Great barbecues, music and interesting company from all over the world - and stargazing in the clear country skies. If you manage to fly from Dasklip to the lodge (not as easy as it looks due to prevailing SW) the first beer is free. Excellent retrieve service, accomodation and info as well. |

Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Airfield launch with use of a payout winch system. There is also mountain launch available but not used very often due to the strong wind gradient |
| Landing : | Semi dessert farmlands. Flat with karoo bush & sand |
| Going there : | In the middle of SA, take the n1 from Cape Town or Johannesburg to Britstown or Hanover & then the N10 to De Aar (shorter options also available on the website) |
| Comments : | The site is a world record XC site. It holds the world record on a DHV 1-2 of 306km. The local, aswell as SA open distance record of 344km. Most pilots come here to get ther 1st 100km, as the site is very reliable & normaly makes it very to achieve this. |

Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Launch can only be reached with a 4x4. very slightly sloping stony area with fynbos covering.Might be classified as a cliff launch as there is a 2metre drop off. |
| Landing : | Bottom landing is possible anywhere but the main landing is a 3km glide. Very large area but running next to the road on the north side is a high power line. Be aware that you may share the field with ostriches who are not only curious but stupid and easily scared. |
| Going there : | Very easy to bottom of launch via the N9 from George. 18 km from Herold. But you need permission and a key to get up the 4x4 track. Best to contact Jan Minnaar 082 777 8474 to make arrangements. www.cloudbase-paragliding.co.za |
| Comments : | Site has not been flown as often as it should! Site record 92.8km Jan Minnaar May 2001 towards the east direction Joubertina. Northerly 1998 Bryan Turner to Calitz Dorp about 65Km. Mike Reilly flew to the Wilderness February 2008 |

Franschoek
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Just over the crest of the Franschhoek Pass, there is a parking area on the left of the road. A fence runs towards the cliffs from the car park, and the launch is at the end of this fence, a few metres into the nature reserve. |
| Landing : | To the right of the base of the pass is an open piece of fallow land, beside or above the new development. Line up on one of the gravel roads. Avoid the restaurant at the base of the pass (with the helicopter pad) as we do not have permission to land there. S and W of the big T-junction in town, beyond the Monument grounds there are some large tree-studded fields. Please don't land at the Monument itself (E of junction). |
| Going there : | Drive towards Paarl on the N1. Take the R44 turnoff to Wellington/Klapmuts/Franschhoek and turn immediately right (under the bridge). After crossing a 4-way intersection, take the 2nd road left, towards Franschhoek. Follow the signboards. Once you have driven through the town, you'll reach a T-junction, where you turn left to head up the pass to Villiersdorp. The landing field is on your left as you begin to climb the pass. At the top of the pass, turn left into a gravel viewsite road and park near the fence. |
| Comments : | A superb place to go for scenic flying high above the vineyards. Thermal and soaring. A superb place to go for scenic flying high above the vineyards, rounded off with a mellow luncheon and wine in the quaint 'Alpine' town. Flyable days here are often before a weak cold-front, with a pre-frontal NW wind. Be aware that the wind is likely to increase rapidly during the day, often peaking at about 1:30 p.m. After 4pm it often weakens. At sunset the wind dies, and can blow downhill at the base of the pass |
| Weather hazards : | Do not use the area directly in front of the upper car park to launch - there is unpredictable turbulence as you cross the road, coupled with heavy traffic. The pass is situated at the end of a long valley, so it is only flyable in very light wind due to the channelling effect of the valley sides. Keep a close eye on wind-signals near the mouth of the valley during your flight. Some unlucky pilots have been blown over the back here into the rotor. Watch the signals - clouds, smoke, water on the dams, trees and other pilots. As you climb higher, fly further forwards into the valley. There is often a strong wind-gradient - as you climb up you fly into stronger winds. The area around the launch site is a strong venturi when the wind increases. I don't advise top-landing in strong winds. |
| Flight regulation : | PERMISSION: Mont Rochelle Conservancy look after the reserve, and an inspector does come to the site to check on permits from time to time. There is a yearly site fee, payable before flying. Contact the clubs to get the necessary paperwork. Please be careful of causing fires and make every effort not to cause erosion on the launch site. |

Gerricke's Point
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | 130m ASL Just 50m to the right of the small clearing where you parked. Please launch towards the front of the ridge to minimize environmental impact of our flying on the Fynbos reserve, where the owners graciously (although we pay for it) let us fly. |
| Landing : | Toplanding in strong wind can be tricky and shouldn't be attempted by beginners, unless guided by an instructor. Please land as much towards the front of the ridge. Otherwise, to the east on the beach, just in front of the small parking area and toilets. Please be mindfull of beach patrons. |
| Going there : | From George or Wilderness, drive along the N2 towards Sedgefield untill you reach a restaurant on your right called Fynbos Grill. Stop there to sign and pay the entry fee of 75 rand. Then drive up the road (great condition), past the owners house - respect the owners privacy and do not speed. You will arrive at a small clearing. Park here. |
| Comments : | This is a Fynbos (a type of heather) reserve. Do not litter, do not smoke,do not make fires, do not speed on the road. Violating any rule will get you banned for life. Please read the posted rules and regulations. Pay the usage fee at Wilderness beach hotel or Fynbos restaurant / Cheeseman at the entry gate to Gerricke's Point. It will get you a sticker for your helmet and allows you to fly the whole Garden Route (25 sites), except Gerricke's Point which is a small extra fee to fly on private property. Please purchase the site guide from http://bestflyingsites.com/paragliding-south-africa.html It has been excerpted here many times. Please support this excellent publication. |
| Weather hazards : | SE light wind only. Excellent if Paradise ridge is too light (<15km/hour). This site will then work well. Dont fly in strong (>25km/hour) wind. |

Gydo Pass
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | site has been opened above the road: a wide, easy launch area. Drive all the way up the pass until it begins to flatten off. Turn into the first farm complex on your right. Locate the owners and ask for permission to drive to takeoff- south (towards Ceres) through their orchards along the crest of the spine until you are overlooking the valley again. |
| Landing : | The farm at the base of the pass, beside the second (lower) dam. |
| Going there : | to Worcester, R43 to Ceres, turn left in Ceres towards 'Prince Alfred's Hamlet', and continue on this road until you climb up the Gydo Pass. Park where the road does its last wide right-hand bend, overlooking the Ceres Valley. |
| Comments : | Only site that works near CT when there is a strong prevailing SE. SE light. Tucked away in the corner of the Ceres valley, Gydo can sometimes escape the SE winds that are lashing the rest of the Cape. On a thermal day, one can climb out from this low pass to the majestic heights of Waboomberg, though it is difficult. |
| Weather hazards : | In summer, a strong W wind rushes towards the desert by the afternoon, making Gydo unsafe and very turbulent - get away early. Power lines criss-cross the landing area. Turbulent in a SW wind. |

Lions Head (Cape Town)
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | about 600m top to bottom 'Lower launch' is reached after a 10 minute walk, where the path narrows from a jeep-track width into a hiking track. It is a challenging launch through a silver-leaf tree grove from a short net-covered runoff. Be meticulous in your layout and pre-flight checks. This is where to launch if it is soarable and SW. The 'Top site' is reached after another 10 minutes of brisk walking. It is NOT on the top of Lion's Head! It's below the cliffs on the NW side. The path is slightly hard to spot on the first pass if you're not following a local, as it's a couple of steps up rocks. Lion's Head is a rocky launch site that is both steep and loose underfoot, though the loose rocks are contained under a tight green net that has been stretched over the launch area (weak ankles, beware). The launch is steep enough that your wing is, between cycles, likely to slide down the netted hill towards you. The wind is usually cross from the left here and there's a significant drop-off a couple of feet from the bottom of the netted area, making good ground-handling and committed launch techniques essential for a safe get-away. |
| Landing : | Landing is on a grassy, shoreline cricket field next to La Med cafe at the Glen Country Club. The field is rented by the Camps Bay High School, so try to have a minimum impact on any sports being played on the field (it is a bit short for hang gliders). There is a sock at the far southwestern corner of the field, but at time of revision the sock in place was on the small side and bleached white by the sun. Aside from the sock, there are plenty of palm trees to watch for wind direction around the field, but no flags, banners or other indicators. The Camps Bay High School field (above the main road, to the left of the big swimming pool) can be used as an alternative if it is empty. During the summer season the Municipality has asked us to please avoid landing on the beaches (Camps Bay, Clifton, Glen). There is also a median strip between the upper main road and the lower main road, just above La Med. The lower slopes of Lion's Head can be used to slope-land in an emergency. Keep in mind that these slopes look deceptively shallow from the air; in truth, they're steeper than they look from above. The hang-gliding alternative landing is Mouille Point lighthouse. |
| Going there : | go direction Camp's Bay/gondola but then turn right and head up the Signal Hill/Lion's Head Rd. Get out when you see cars parked and walk up til you see the take-off. Quite small and steep but you get used to it. ------------ Drive up through Cape Town and take Kloof Nek road up to the pass between Lion's Head and Table Mountain. At the circle, turn right to Signal Hill and continue until the road levels out. You will find a gravel car park to the right of the road. The path to the launch is on the left as you reach the car park. |
| Comments : | Spectacular coastal flying. Sometimes when it's just right you can fly across to Table Mountain, get up and fly all the way down the Twelve Apostles. Soaring. Home of the Glen Paragliding Club, a consistent and beautiful site to fly, offering a panorama of Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles. In the afternoon, Lion's Head heats up and generates a thermal, upslope breeze. Best flying is from 3pm onwards during wind-shadow conditions. Parking is on the back (Cape Town side) of Lion's Head, and then a stiff hike is required up the gravel road and around to the front side. Because of the spire-shape of the peak, the wind diverges around it, causing a strong increase in wind speed at both takeoff sites when it is soarable. The wind is usually crossed from the left (S) at the topside and very strong, and crossed from the right (NW) at the lower site. Please don't pioneer a new launch site somewhere else on the mountain as it is a Nature Reserve. HG: get permission to drive a 4x4 up to the launch site. Contact the Nature Conservation office (RHS of Signal Hill road on way up). |
| Weather hazards : | The Capetonian weather changes fast, so always keep an eye out for squalls and such things. Watch the water for the development of white lines. If possible, get someone to drop you off, because of break-ins in the car park (the 'car attendants' do reduce the risk somewhat). Lion's Head has complex weather systems, so ask the locals for advice. When it is soarable, the strong venturi effect at both takeoff sites can be hazardous. Ensure that your launch is directly into the wind, and that the conditions are within your capabilities. Begin your soaring flight with very short tacks back and forwards until you have established the limits of the venturi-effect at each side of the peak, as penetration into the wind becomes difficult beyond either takeoff site. If you are blown over the back, try to fly around the side as much as possible (not directly behind the peak). Turn and run for the end of Signal Hill if possible. When the wind turns southerly, the spine which runs down to Camps Bay High School from lower launch generates lift on its windward side, and sink on the leeward side, so fly to the left of the spine to reach the landing field, otherwise you'll be forced to land short. In berg-wind conditions (prevailing NE wind), it is possible to sneak off Lion's Head in a thermal cycle. This is a bad idea, because the hot, dry and descending air will try to mix with the cool, moist sea air, making conditions very unstable on the way in to the landing field. There may be a shear layer between the two air masses with violent lift and sink. |

|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Walk uphill from the cars, over the fence and about 50m up through the bush where you'll find a small cleared area. |
| Landing : | Any of the uncultivated fields close to the road at the base of the pass. Beware of power lines and telephone lines which cross some of the left fields. |
| Going there : | Take the N1 towards Paarl, turn left onto the N7, and drive to Piketberg. Enter the town via the first turning, and drive through town, exiting on the northern end. After 1 km turn left at the signboard 'Versveld Pass'. Park, on the cutaway to the left just after the last tight hairpin turn. |
| Comments : | E BASIC A site used when the wind is over the back at Porterville. |
| Weather hazards : | An Easterly wind can sometimes be a 'berg wind', with associated gusts, turbulence, and dust-devils. Take care that you do not under-estimate the wind speed, as it can be very strong aloft. If the wind swings to southerly, the gully in front of launch produces wicked turbulence. |
| Flight regulation : | ceiling 450m ASL (military), 2100m ASL (commercial). PERMISSION: none needed. Access to the radio mast above Piketberg town through Eskom to be negotiated. |

Rondebosh
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Not well maintained. Good ground handling skill is of essence/very important! The big advantage with Rondebosh is - it has takeoffs in just about any wind direction apart of N-W. (There is actually a N-W takeoff too, but flying in that wind is close to impossible.) Takeoff is basically anywhere you can find a clean patch of ground, usually halfway up the hill. |
| Landing : | In case of not going XC, there are lots of open spaces for landing in any wind direction (grass pastures - please mind the grassing cattle here and there) For XC there are fairly good tar and gravel roads in just about any direction. |
| Going there : | N2 - Humansdorp turnoff to Hankey.After 3Km the hill is on the left,next to the road. |
| Comments : | The local farmer (private property) does not want foreign people on his land. (Cattle farm) He does not mind Paragliders but is very fond of pasture gates been left open.A handful of local pilots pay a courtesy fee of about 35 USD annually. Visitors are welcome if accompanied by a local pilot. |
| Weather hazards : | The S-W wind can surprise a non-local pilot. Strong, punchy thermals and cloud suck (beginner pilots) |

SedgeField, Cloud Nine
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Large cleared area to the north of the village of Sedgefield The orientation of the site is 242Deg!! |
| Landing : | Top Landing possible, get a site briefing. For students and low airtime pilots: Large Grass field below ridge. Official landing directly below launch with Yellow windsock. Please walk out to gate in the direction of the village. |
| Going there : | From the Wilderness side: drive through Sedgefield. Last road on the left is Egret road, go over railway line and follow dirt road, keeping left. Pass a wooden house 'kammasKamma' on the right.100 metres further the road turns right, as it straightens there is a small road to the left leading directly to the launch. There is a restriction on number of cars so call a local. |
| Comments : | South Africa, Wilderness (20 km east of Wilderness), Cloud Nine. Thermo/dynamic site. |
| Weather hazards : | Extremely turbulent in a South but is possible to fly. Westerly could be more North than it looks higher up. |
| Flight regulation : | Ceiling of 465M ASL!! George airspace. Do not fly past the grove of pine trees to the west (right of launch) with less than 100m above take off!! Please read site rules on board with contact numbers if in doubt |

|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Grass field. Suitable for top landing. |
| Landing : | Top landing, or a field below the take off, next to the train tracks. There is a windsock there. |
| Going there : | On the N2, take that last road on the left in Sedgeview coming from George, Take a left into MAkou / Egret lane. Also has a sign cemetery Refuse dump. Cross the railway track follow dirt road keeping left for about 3 km.After you pass the wooden house KAMASKAMA There are two roads turning left, the first one has a one way sign. Take the next right and you arrive. |
| Comments : | Please read the posted rules and regulations. It is extremely important that you do not fly over the pine tree forest 800m west of launch with less than 100m ato. Please purchase the site guide from http://bestflyingsites.com/paragliding-south-africa.html It has been excerpted here many times. Please support this excellent publication. |
| Weather hazards : | SSE has severe turbulences. Please be careful, check the wind direction at the bottom windsock, as the gradient rolls the wind straight up the slope. There is a real time weather station provided by Cloudbase Paragliding http://iweathar.co.za/display.php?s_id=74 |

Signal Hill Bench
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Sports-rated (advanced site) above city of Cape Town for sea-breeze saoraing with some thermals. Easy slope launch. Advanced because wind gradient can increase rapidly and no landing options if blown over. Also, landing if not on top can be difficult due to flying over buildings. DO NOT FLY unless suitably rated and accompanied by experienced local pilot. 'The Point': for NW winds, drive all the way to the end of the road, and park in the large tarred car park. The launch is on the grassed picnic area just to the left of the car park. Any suitable area below the chains just before the car park. 'The Bench' is 1km S along the ridge, and is more suited to W winds. It is accessible from the tar road via a little gravel turnoff and car park. The lay out area is behind the scenic bench. |
| Landing : | Easy top-landing, otherwise several landing field options below, but over buildings so do not get more than 40m below take-off before heading for landing. DO NOT FLY unless suitably rated and accompanied by experienced local pilot. Top landing and slope-landing skills essential for paragliders. Sometimes this is the only option, and it can be very tricky in strong winds; the compression is powerful. If you can penetrate against the lower winds, fly out and land on the field to the left of the Green Point Stadium. HG: In NW conditions, the biggest field W of Green Point Stadium. If the conditions have swung SW on the ground, then the original LZ at the Hamilton rugby field (close to the Point Health & Racquet Club) is better. |
| Going there : | Drive up Kloof Nek Road. Drive past Lion's Head towards Signal hill lookout point. Halfway along there is an entrance to the left (after the Muslim Kramat). Walk to left and takeoff facing sea. Second takeoff at lookout point, on grass to left of boardwalk. |
| Comments : | The ideal Sunday afternoon soaring site. A long ridge that is the body of the animal that forms Lion's Head. Signal Hill forms a smoothly sloped obstruction to the north-westerly wind. The lift band is usually wide but not too high, peppered with the odd thermal. Hang gliders tap into the real magic of Signal Hill when the wind is really strong, soaring high in the laminar flow. If it's too light here, go to Sir Lowry's Pass. If it's too strong at Sir Lowry's, come back here. |
| Weather hazards : | Rapid shift in wind strength and wind gradient often without visibly warning on sea. This site has caught experienced pilots out so many times. It looks safe; do not be fooled into flying here before you are Sport licensed. Conditions are usually prefrontal when you fly Signal Hill, so beware of strong wind-gradient and rapid wind increase. There is nowhere to run to should the wind increase. Avoid flying in Berg (NE) conditions, or soon after the wind has swung from NE to NW. The bergish air does not dissipate immediately, so for this reason be wary of particularly gusty NW winds. Slope landing becomes more difficult the lower you get. The best place is in the venturi on the N corner, where your groundspeed will be less. Gliding out too low or against an unexpected headwind to land at Green Point can mean a forced landing amongst buildings. There is sometimes a strong, turbulent S blowing below 100m, creating shear turbulence. Check the flags at the Liquor Store on the main road slightly to the right of your approach path. If the wind is from the left at the Bench, it is SW, and will be very turbulent and not much fun. Beware of vandals in the car park. Hang-gliders: 'White horses' on the sea? Don't land at Green Point common, because the rotor from the flat blocks can be nasty. Run on to Lion's Head and go to the far end of Camps Bay beach. |
| Flight regulation : | Sports-rated airspace ceiling at 1200m. |
| People to contact : | Glen PG CLub, Overberg PG Club PERMISSION: none needed, but regular pilots should buy a Wild Card (covers all sites in Cape Peninsula Park). |

South Africa > Western Cape
Sir Lowry s Pass
|
|
Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Launch for competent pilots (very good ground-handling skills) from the grassed slope below the wall, where turbulence from the big rocks to the right or left can make it risky. If you misjudge the wind, you are likely to get blown back into the car park. For an easier launch, walk directly across the road from the entrance to the car park, and take the little footpath up the mountain, bearing left until you ascend the final steep crest (10 minutes). You will be high above the pass. There is a wind streamer tied to a tall pole, and some netting on the ground. Have a good look at the wind speed: you do not want to be blown over the back of this mountain! |
| Landing : | At the base of the pass, on the S side of the road, before the pine trees is a bald spot. Anywhere close by, in the low bushes is okay, but be careful not to damage the sensitive fynbos. Be careful of the big set of power lines on final approach on the far side of the landing spot, between it and the highway. Please do not land too close to the road, as you may cause an accident. More experienced pilots can land a little further on, at the second clearing where the retrieval road turns off the base of the pass. Top landing is not recommended when the car park is congested (weekends, holidays) or for Basic Pilots. If the air is thermal or the wind crossed, top landing is very risky. |
| Going there : | Sir Lowry's Pass on N2 Highway Hottentots-Holland Mountains Somerset West, Western Cape, ZA. N2 towards Caledon, at the top of the Sir Lowry's Pass, turn right into the viewsite. Beware of baboons (keep food out of sight and windows closed). |
| Comments : | Basic (+ 4 guided flights) Alt: 420 m asl, airspace ceiling 1200m asl Soaring and thermal. A regular site that offers soaring, thermalling and cross-country, with superb views. The long mountain chain extends in a fairly consistent ridge to the south. To the north of takeoff the ridge rises to become towering mountain peaks, then curves to form a semicircle. Thermals can be strong, taking you high up and away from the earth, into the blue. |
| Weather hazards : | Severe wind gradient in a NW. If the wind swings S, conditions will get very turbulent, and top landing dangerous. Sometimes it is flyable with a light SE, in lee- side wind-shadow conditions. Watch the wind on the water, and be very careful of the wind- line deteriorating. |

| Take off : | takeoff overlooking town of louis trichardt, located in limpopo province, south africa, very good road leading up to hanglip main picnic area, parking under shady trees, a short walk to take off, lay your glider out, pull up and fly! launch is at 1600 metres above sea level, flying area is located in military airspace, so contact the site controler to get advance clearance, total area to fly in 150 sq, kilometres, ceiling restriction is at 9500 feet above ground, |
| Landing : | landing is below take off. |
| Going there : | from johannesburg by road is about 4,5 hours travelling, roads are very good, with plenty of accomodation availiable in louis trichardt. |
| Comments : | turn-around time from landing to launch is about 45 minutes on a lazy drive up to hanglip main picnic area, the area is very scenic, and the minimum license requirements is S.A.H.P.A. Sport Lisence. Airspace controllers require all pilots to fly with airband radio, and to make arrangements for flying EVERYTIME one wants to fly. |

| Take off : | The Site is in a active Iron Ore mine, and due to this had more rules and regulations than the average site, please be sure to observe all the site rules, as access to the site is sensitive! The Launch is Specially Bulldozed for Paragliding and Hang Gliding, on the top of a gravel dump on top of the mountain. The launch is steep, and faces North, though it will fly almost any wind direction due to the strong thermal wind generated on the slope below launch. There is a strong vertical component in the wind on Launch, and it is possible to fly in wind that may feel like it is too strong. |
| Landing : | Landing has also been cleared and bulldozed for paragliding and hang gliding, it is a 3:1 glide from launch, and 380m below launch. The landing slopes down towards town, away from the mountain, and care should be taken not to overshoot, it is usually best to land parallel to the mountain, either to the east or west, depending on the wind. |
| Going there : | Access must be arranged with one of the two Site officers, as getting to launch is not obvious, and first time visitors are not allowed un guided. |
| Comments : | It is required to do induction at the mine annually to be able to access the launch, not only for pilot, but for anyone wishing enter the mine property. |

Pay a small entry fee and drive up the asphalt road untill you see a small parking. Park and walk a few meters up the steps. Take-off on either side. The north take off is suitable for NE winds, which are very rare. Other north winds place you in rotor potential. |
| Comments : | Name of the site is also just Graaff-Reinet. Launching site is in a National Park, please protect the environment and therfore the priviledge to launch here. Beware of SW winds when going over the ridge to land in Graaff-Reinet, if lower than say, 50m, do not go directly towards the landing zones, rather fly a bit more south before heading towards landing. |
| Weather hazards : | Wind can get quite strong, there is a risk of getting blown over the back, you do NOT want that! Thermals usually come through in intervals, in order to get up you need to launch into a thermal. Ridge on the left of launch usually does not have thermals. Beware of south-easterly winds, if strong the gully to the right of the launching site can get turbulent. South east winds are best flown on the south east facing ridge, ie. directly after take off, fly SE until the ridge drops away, you will then be in a bowl which develops very nice lift, including thermal. |
| Flight regulation : | The arrangement with ATC Cape Town is that we will inform them if we do fly.Tel nr is 021 9371116.Stay clear of the airport as we do not want any close incidents. |

Van Rhyn's Pass

Flying seasons : |
| Take off : | Below the road on the last bend in the pass, is a small, steeply sloped cleared patch amongst the desert scrub. |
| Landing : | Top landing is highly recommended, as the vegetation at the base of the pass is unfriendly. Any uncultivated land is suitable. Please avoid rooibos plantations, especially the one directly behind takeoff (over the back). |
| Going there : | Take the N7 past Clanwilham, to Vanrhynsdorp, where you must turn off and follow the signs to Calvinia. After 50km you climb up the Van Rhyn's Pass. Don't park on the pass - drive around to the viewsite on top. |
| Comments : | Soaring and thermal. 350km north of Cape Town, the Van Rhyn's Pass scribes a line up the plateau that forms the gateway to the Karoo semi-desert wilderness. Soarable in winter, and extremely thermal in summer, this is a site remarkable for its desolate beauty, and the remote charm of the little village of Nieuwoudtville behind. There is typically an inversion layer 350m above takeoff, although if you break through this, there is fantastic XC potential heading east across the plateau towards Calvinia. |
| Weather hazards : | Good ground-handling in thermal conditions on launch is essential, as there are some nasty big rocks, and the launch site is restricted. Heavy thermal activity in summer. |
