Take off : Flat grass area looking East North and west . Kea flying...
Very easy and clean.
might be a bit wet in the morning.
Landing : 1- Car park of Franz Joseph Glacier or the flat land of the large river in the Franz valley.

2- If south or western wind, fly west and land on a grass paddock north of alex knob, 1000m down, not so far from the road.
Going there :
Go to the top of Alex Knob (see NZ DoC information, it's very well indicated) 1000m of going up hill.
Comments : WARNING: Franz Joseph is THE BUSIEST Heliport in the southern hemisphere. DO NOT FLY when Helicopter do.
They do usually from 8am to 5pm but sometimes earlier and later. Get information from these companies prior flying.
I flew it 7:30am in April time, just at sunrise. No wind, no helicopter, the best flight ever!
Fly above the glacier if there is no wind but beware of the catabatic wind (down the glacier).
Best is to climb in the afternoon, try to fly in the evening after the heli or camp overnight up there and take off in the morning. Best to have a radio with helicopters frequency.
Weather hazards : beware of the catabatic wind (down the glacier).
Flight regulation : CONTACT EVERY HELICOPTER COMPANIES before flying to arrange a specific hour for you to fly. They have no right for forbidding you, but much more powerfull to kill you with theur big noisy machines...
DoC has nothing against flying in the National Park.

Take off : Summit road - 1 km south of the radar (big green ball at the summit)
Lower takeoff is best in light winds.
On the top takeoff keep the 'runway' clear for top landings.
Landing : By the living Spring road turn off. Private property, farm beside. Thank the guy. Watch the power line all around the field. plus its a bit slopy. Bit technical.
Better to do a slope landing close to the top or a top landing beside the rock pile with a wind sock on it.
Best hang gliding landing is on the north of the Teddington straights. Power lines run along the road.
Another great place to land is in the paddock beside the Wheatsheif Tavern in Teddington.
Going there : Follow the Summit road, 6 or 7 kms south of the Sign of the Kiwi
Comments : Contact local pilots.
It's a good site if Taylors Mistake has too little wind but good direction.
Closed during lambing season.

Take off : Site Rating:
PG: P.G.2
HG: Novice

Takeoff height is 700ft ASL and 400ft above the landing paddock.
Landing : The bottom landing is straigh out in front, in any one of several paddocks.

For hang glider retrieval vehicles the bottom landing is accessed through a farm on the Woodcocks - Kaipara flats Rd. Take the first turning on the left over the railway tracksand drive up the gravel road to the first gate on the right (approx 1.5km), drive through this gate which leads up to a brick house ownd by the Dill family. if no one is home continue past the double garage and veer slightly left across the paddock to a gate amongst the pine trees. Proceed through the gate down to the landing paddocks, closing gates behind you. Check at the farm house before you go through the property. Be aware that the farmer of this property and landing paddock has been from time to time very concerned about gates being left open allowing mixing of stock etc.
Going there : Located West of Warkworth you reach the site by driving North along State Highway 1 to Warkworth. As you enter the township of Warkworth take the first turn left (Woodcocks Rd) and follow this road for 10km to a railway crossing. Continue up the hill for about 1.5km until you reach the top at a sharp right hand bend with a pull over area and gate to a pine forest on the left. On the right there is a clay dry weather only track leading to the takeoff. Go through 2 more gates up to the trig and then you are in the launch area.
Comments : This site often closes for lambing during September.

Weather hazards : Be careful of scratching low down amongst the spines if the wind is very cross.

There is a good top landing in the paddock to the left of takeoff however do not go behind the crest on the top landing as this can be expensive in aluminium and pride. Although there are a number of possible landing paddocks take care to thoroughly scrutinise these on foot beforehand as some have little streams and gullies running through them plus a few bulls! If the wind is off to the east - southeast landing can be turbulent.
Flight regulation : This site is located within TMA C with a flight ceiling of 4,500 ft ASL. Kaipara flats air field almost directly in front to the North East is a parachute drop zone with a 3 nautical mile no flying restriction. Both Kaipara flats and North Shore air fields need to be advised of your presence here prior to flying.

If you expect to go cross country heading in a south westerly i.e. anything on the southern side of Woodcock Rd linking through to Araparera remember the flight ceiling is 3,500 ft ASL.

Take off : Launch area is a little scruffy, steep, and restricted in size.

No overrun, due trees immediately below launch - requires enough wind to lift you off your feet and a firm run or you will be treed right on the edge of the cliff! Zero-wind launches are out of the question. Minimum wind 10km/hr approx, or at pilots' discretion.
Landing : Land on the reserve next to the Whakatane river right in front of launch - better options available toward the south of the reserve.

No top land available at carpark due severe turbulence, despite large grassy area. Top land at launch for smartass gurus only - put your name here if you can do it. ;)
Going there : You need two vehicles for this site, as it's a substantial walk back to the top, and top-landings at the carpark are too dangerous.

Take off :
Site Rating:
PG: P.G.2
HG: Intermediate

Takeoff is at 1,050ft ASL, 800ft above the landing paddock.
Landing :
Landing requires careful consideration being in a valley with the wind usually coming from one end or the other. An aircraft type landing circuit approach is strongly recommended to determine the wind direction in the bottom of the valley (often different from the wind on launch).

Top landing on takeoff is possible although very tight for hang gliders and often quite thermic posing difficulty for paragliders. An alternative top landing is available to the north east of the transmitter tower requiring a minimum of 600ft above takeoff before making an approach.

Top landing at any point should only be attempted by those experienced in top landing.
Going there :
Access to the site is 6km north of the Puhoi turn off on State Highway 1. Turn left into Moirs Hill Rd, adjacent to the rest area at the end of Windy Ridge. Follow this gravel road to the end and park beside the transmitter tower. Access from this point is by foot through the left hand gate, following the track to the end.
Comments :
Particular care should be taken to ensure all gates are closed as the farmer has concerns as to his stock being released into the Department of Conservation reserve and ferral goats from the reserve getting into his property. The availability of the landing paddock should be checked around lambing and haymaking times. Hay paddocks are usually shut off from stock from Nov through to Jan.
Weather hazards :
Flight regulation :
Located in TMA C, flight ceiling immediately above launch is 3,500ft ASL, rising to 4,500ft as soon as you cross Woodcocks Rd, heading in a north or north easterly direction. Heading south across the valley takes you into North Shore airfield training space with a continued flight ceiling of 3,500ft. Every time this site is flown both North Shore airfield and Kaipara Flats airfield should be advised of your presence.

As Kaipara Flats airfield is located directly north of this site (usually immediately downwind) and this airfield is used as a parachute drop zone, there is a no flying restriction within a 3 nautical mile radius of the airfield. This restriction can be reduced on occasions if the airfield is not being used by obtaining their express consent to cut through the south eastern sector, no closer that 2 nautical miles from the airfield.

Please be careful. There is sacred Maori land that must be respected, and also some of the neighbours don't like people flying too close to their houses. When the wind is coming from a particular direction, things can also get very turbulent. I personally know of 2 broken backs at this site, and almost killed myself here twice too (by being an idiot). This site is deceptively calm-looking.

Please talk to the contacts listed before flying here - they're real friendly. ;)

Take off : If you are using the walkway through the campground, you must visit the camp office before and let them know you are on site. They are glad to have the Paragliders there, as they are a good buzz for the campers but they would just like to know who is around. Permission will always be forthcoming.

Would experienced pilots please examine the alternate takeoff 200 meters to the east for NE winds.
Landing : Top-land (usual caution the Rotor), or extensive sandy beach areas below.

Expert Pilots may land in the campground if they deem conditions suitable, but great caution must be taken, particularly in high-season December to February, when the camp will be full. There is ample flat LZ between the camp and the dunes, and this is only a 2 minute walk to the base of the track.
Going there : 35 mins east of Whakatane. Park on the road outside the camp entrance, or walk up from the reserve down the road, or else walk up the road from Bryans' beach.
Comments : The entire top of this hill is a DOC reserve. The whole top area may be used as launch or landing. Usual care with closing gates please. There is no prohibition during the lambing season, but we'd like to suggest it would be easy for the site owners to create one if we made some problem.

Weather hazards : The takeoff in northerly winds is not appropriate. It's rotary and twitchy, and likely to put you into the trees.

Flight regulation : Nil, but caution the low-level VFR weekend microlight traffic out of Opotiki grass aerodrome 5NM to the ESE on frequency 119.1MHz

People to contact : Ohiwa Family Holiday Park, if walking through their grounds. No other permission required.

Tourism  : Stay at the campground - usually booked out over the high summer, but a super nice place to stay, and nice people too!.

Take off : This site is largely abandoned due to the actions of the hostile property manager.

There is also the matter of the large step in the front face causing all sorts of substantial rotor in the launch area.

Take off :
On arrival at Sunset Beach there is a grassed area to the left of the toilet block and, on the southern side of this grassed area a private driveway access and little bridge across a small creek. Pass beyond the small bridge and you will find the obscure beginnings of the track which runs up through toitoi bushes and along the ridge heading south from the beach.

Hang gliders have previously used a launch located a short way along this track. This small launch area is on the edge of the cliff and is unsuitable for paragliders. The second top takeoff point is further up the same track where it exits the bush onto a large rounded hilltop.

On strong days it is also possible to launch from the sand dunes immediately in front of the cliffs to the left of the carpark and beach entrance area.
Landing :
At high tide the amount of beach available for landing can be restricted, requiring care and planning of landings. Take care to land on the beach outside of the flagged swimming area and summer crowds.
Going there :
This site is located on the West Coast on the southern side of the Waikato River. Take the motorway south from Auckland to the Bombay Hills, follow the signposts to Tuakau, and from there the signposts to Port Waikato and Sunset Beach.
Comments :
Take care when soaring in the bowl to the south of the top takeoff as switches in wind direction can result in one or other side of this bowl being in rotor.

I flew this site in 2009 after asking some local far north residents for advise on where to find cliffs or mounds facing the prevailing winds. I soared for just a few minutes in 10-15mph south/southwest winds before a rain squall moved in (video attached).
